Instruction will focus on effective methods for teaching marksmanship skills, evaluation of shooter performance, and correcting gun handling deficiencies. Participants will return to their agencies with a clear understanding of range safety protocols, weapons maintenance procedures, and how to manage an efficient in-service firearms program.

Course Objectives:

  1. Provide the instructors with a basic understanding of marksmanship and how to apply the basic fundamentals to their students.
  2. Provide the instructor with observation skills to be able to identify student errors and deliver a process on how to correct errors students may encounter.
  3. Provide the instructors the knowledge to be effective in teaching techniques and drills in a way that is understandable to their students.
  4. Provide a building method that extends past basic firearms usage and into defensive scenarios that can be used during training.
  5. Provide students a foundation on how to successfully build a firearms training program for their department.

 Course Requirements:

  1. A written examination, consisting of 50 questions, with a minimum passing score of 70%.
  2. Pistol qualification utilizing targets with scoring rings and a prescribed course of fire from 5-25 yards.

Students Must Bring:

  • Ear and eye protection
  • Duty belt with flashlight
  • Pistol
  • 12 gauge shotgun
  • Pistol – 500 rounds ammunition minimum
  • Shotgun – 25 rounds, 5 slug rounds – 12 gauge
  • Billed baseball cap

Safety Procedures:

  • Students will arrive at the range wearing their duty belts and handguns
  • Duty belts will be worn at all times unless otherwise instructed
  • Handguns will remain holstered unless otherwise instructed
  • Shotguns must be unloaded and transported in a case or sleeve
  • Shotguns will remain encased pending a safety check by instructors
  • Students will not load, unload, or handle any weapon until instructed
  • Students will follow all commands from the instructional staff
  • Students will adhere to all range safety rules established by the Bloomington Police Department

Dress Code: Casual/soft clothing is appropriate for this course. However – for safety reasons – shorts and sandals are prohibited. Athletic shoes, utility shoes, work boots, or other laced shoes are permitted. Please bring appropriate attire for inclement weather. Much of the training will occur outdoors.

 

Please Note: There will be a low light portion of the course on Wednesday, 5/25/22, that will begin at 7:00 p.m. in addition to the 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. course hours.
