This 24-hour course is designed to instruct law enforcement officials with the most recent and effective procedures for testing suspected drivers for intoxication at the roadside. Upon completion of the course, officers will possess the skills necessary to conduct the recommended field sobriety tests developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The course will be a combination of lecture and practical exercises. Trainees will actually administer the NHTSA standardized field sobriety tests to intoxicated individuals. Topics of instruction include:
• Visual Detection of Drinking Drivers
• DUI/Implied Consent Law
• Standardized Field Sobriety Tests: Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk & Turn, One-Leg Stand, Finger-To-Nose, Other Field Techniques
• Report Content/Court Presentation
• Drug Recognition
• Zero Tolerance Arrests
Each officer who attends will receive the following materials:
• Student Manual
• Pocket Notebook with Tests
• Legal Guidelines
Due to the nature of the training, class size is limited.
This course is certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. Therefore, trainees must attend all three days and demonstrate their skills and knowledge through a written and practical exam in order to receive a state certification.
